Coalition of Niger Delta pressure groups has faulted the All Progressives Congress, APC, for sticking to the candidature of Femi Gbajabiamila, insisting that the speaker is better positioned in the North-Central with John Dyegh as the preferred candidate.
The groups which joined others in endorsing John Dyegh (APC, Benue) said it believes in equity and justice and such it is mobilizing lawmakers from the Niger Delta region and other parts of the country to support Dyegh and have a balance in key government and national political positions.
They also noted that with the Benue APC lawmaker becoming the speaker, it will create inroads and acceptability for the party in the zone that has been dominated by the opposition.
Joined by other umbrella groups, under Citizens United to Save Democracy, CUSD, the Niger Delta Coalition in a statement signed by Comrade Nwokoma Messiah of the Niger Delta Renaissance Organization, NDRO, Comrade Collins Obilor of Niger Delta Project, NDP, and Ibiye Douglas of Ijaw Justice Forum, IJF, argued that “for the purpose of justice, equity and fair play, we in the Niger Delta region through this coalition have decided to endorse Dyegh for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
They explained that beyond competence, which is believed that a lot of members from the various parties and other zones have, it is morally wrong and injustice to deprive the North-Central of the position.
The coalition disclosed that the zone voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari during the last General elections and would be morally unacceptable if it is denied the position of Speaker.
According to the group, “it is also imperative to recognize the fact that Dyegh emerged victorious despite challenges and the best we can do is to give him the support that will ensure that the party makes inroads in Benue and the region as a whole.”
Declaring it’s support for Dyegh, CUSD said in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Fashola Adams, that making” Dyegh Speaker of the Ninth House of Representatives is an idea whose time has come and called on the entire members of the House to support his historic candidacy irrespective of sectional, ethnic or religious affiliation. “
